Or of course the user could do a simple save as and change the newly saved files name, delete original and rename the new copy back to the original name works as well. The files are neither protected nor shared, so I do not think this is the problem.I have tried remapping the network drives via both cli and the gui (in different interfaces) but I havent had any luck fixing the problem. This problem initially occurred with Office 16 and I have since upgraded the user to 2019.
Finally, and probably most importantly, the files that are read only are files that are kept open usually overnight. I think what is happening is that her workstation loses connection to the server overnight and once the connection is severed the file locks up. I do have a group policy that maps the specific drive but I have not yet rolled it out to her department. ![]() If you right click the file go to properties security tab advanced owner change. You will need to do it with an admin account, but once you take ownership the file should be accessible again. What is confusing though is they rebooted everything and they were still getting the error of the file being already open. I would have thought rebooting all the computers and router would have cleared the open files in the shared folder. Its odd though that in the computer Management console the open files just show as folder names not individual file names, there are about 30 of them. So something else is happening if the first person to open the file after the server reboots gets the error. A reboot wont necessarily do that, because it is normally deleted when the file is properly closed. ![]() You will normally see some folders listed there, along with open files. If there are no actual files listed, I would say the files are not open. ![]() The file is being opened and locked when being previewed and then they are opening it again in a different program. It might be worth using Computer Management System Tools Shared Folders on the server to see whether the file is being left open. If it is then maybe the user in question can close everything down when shes finished (and shut down her PC as well to help the lovely environment).
